Chapman Laboratory

Chapman Lab

Testing Facilities

Large Structural Laboratory

The Chapman Laboratory is a fully equipped structural laboratory, incorporating a flexible system and "strong floor", loads from several Kilograms to hundreds of tonnes can be applied to objects up to 50m2.

Specifications Common Usage
Area: 24 m x 6 m Static and dynamic load application of multiple loads at varying angles and magnitudes
Strong Floor :850kN/bolt
Bolt Grid: 1.2m x 1.2m
5 tonne overhead crane

Small Structural Laboratory

The EngTest Laboratory has a "strong floor" and tensioning bed and is used for general testing.

Specifications Common Usage
Area: 15m x 8m General low capacity testing
Strong Floor: 70kN/bolt
Bolt Grid: 1ft x 1ft
2 tonne overhead crane

Instron Dynamic Testing Machine

EngTest maintains two testing frames and one system comprising of three independent hydraulic rams. The two test frames are suitable for the testing of components up to approximately 1m3 in size while the independent rams in conjunction with the strong floor allow much larger objects to be tested. The frequency response of all systems is dependent on the item under test.

Specifications Common Usage
Column Machine 1
Instron 1282
Components and materials to approximately 1m3 requiring high loads. A range of hydraulic grips are available for tension testing.
Frequency range: 0 to 100 Hz
Stroke: +/- 75mm
Load Capacity:
Compression:
1000/750kN (Static/Dynamic)
Tension:
500/250kN (Static/Dynamic)
Column Machine 2
Instron 1342

Smaller components and materials requiring medium loads. A range of hydraulic grips are medium loads. A range of hydraulic grips are available for tension testing.

Frequency range: 0 to 100 Hz
Stroke : +/- 75mm
Load Capacity:
100/50kN (Static/Dynamic)
500/250kN (Static/Dynamic)

This uses airbags and an electronically controlled hydraulic system to apply static or dynamic loads to components requiring a uniform load distribution.

Specifications Common Usage
Length: 5.4m Determining the resistance of sheet roof and wall cladding to wind pressures.
Width: 1800mm
Pressure: up to 20kPa

George Sved Laboratory

This laboratory has several smaller test machines such as the Mohr & Federhaff universal test machines. These machines are fitted with computer acquisition systems for recording load and deflection data.
One of these machines is NATA calibrated.
