Profession and academia

Deric Oehlers is Professor of Structural Engineering. He has 7 years industrial experience in consultancy and contracting in the design and construction of multi-storey reinforced concrete structures and composite steel and concrete bridges in England and the West Indies. This was followed by 7 years of research at Warwick University in England on the behaviour of composite steel and concrete beams, then 7 years research and lecturing at University College Cork in Eire, after which he moved to Adelaide University in 1988. He has a BSc from London University, both an MSc in Structural Engineering and a PhD from Warwick University in England, and a higher doctorate, DEng, from The University of Adelaide for his research into partial-interaction theory in composite steel and concrete structures, in reinforced concrete structures, and in steel and FRP plated structures. He has contributed to 6 national and international codes of practice. His research on the fatigue resistance of composite bridges has been included in the assessment version of the British steel code which was used in a national assessment of bridges in the UK, and his research on steel and FRP plating has been published as a guideline by Standards Australia and has also been applied to strengthening bridges in Australia.

Research

Deric Oehlers' research is mainly in the field of composite structures and in particular the assessment and rehabilitation of existing structures. Through his research he has developed techniques for: determining the strength of the shear connection in composite beams with solid and profiled slabs; assessing the remaining fatigue endurance and residual strength of composite steel and concrete bridges; the design of composite profiled slabs and profiled beams; strengthening and stiffening reinforced concrete structures by adhesively bonding steel or fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) plates to their surfaces for static and fatigue loads; bolting steel and FRP plates to reinforced concrete structures to increase both their strength and ductility; and for modeling and quantifying the rotational ductility of plated and unplated reinforced concrete members. He has published 4 books, over 90 journal papers and over 70 conference papers that are frequently cited internationally. He has given 5 keynote conference addresses and acts as a reviewer for 21 journals as well as being on the editorial board of 5 international journal.

Teaching

Professor Deric Oehlers teaches the structural design of reinforced concrete, steel, and composite steel and concrete structures, and retrofitting of reinforced concrete structures. He uses design to encourage the students to use their ingenuity and learn the fundamental principles that are mostly hidden within standards. To do this, he deliberately sets consulting projects beyond the scope of present codes such as: the insertion of service ducts in the webs of existing composite beams in buildings; the fatigue assessment of the residual strength and residual endurance of existing composite beams; retrofitting reinforced concrete structural frames by steel or FRP adhesively bonded plates for strength, ductility and stiffness; seismic retrofitting of RC columns by bolting plates; and the design of continuous composite beams that are integral with composite profiled slabs. He has given retrofitting courses in Hong Kong, Malaysia, South Korea and Italy. He has published four books that cover the fundamental principles behind structural behaviours and which are used in his courses. And he has published three journal papers on engineering education in which he developed the sequential approach for assessing the students ability in problem solving and for teaching the fundamental principles in reinforced concrete design.

Research

Typical Research

Retrofitting by adhesively bonding steel and FRP plates
An inexpensive procedure for strengthening or stiffening reinforced concrete structures is to adhesively bond steel or fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) externally bonded (EB) plates or near surface mounted (NSM) plates to their surfaces. Unfortunately these plates can be prone to premature debonding. Comprehensive design rules have been developed for monotonic loads which have now been published as an Australian Guideline by Standards Australia. Current research is now concentrating on adhesively bonding FRP plates to steel and masonry structures as well as on determining the ductility of plated structures and their response to fatigue and seismic loads.

Retrofitting RC beams and columns by bolting steel or FRP plates
Theoretical research and tests have shown that adhesively bonded plates can fail prematurely and in a brittle fashion. To overcome this problem a new technique of plating has been developed where the plates are bolted to the RC structure. Tests on beams and columns have shown that bolted plated beams and columns tend to fail in a ductile fashion because of the partial interaction between the plate and the RC member. Mathematical models have been developed to quantify the flexural strength, shear strength and ductility of this new form of construction. Cyclic tests on plated columns have also shown that this new technique can be used to seismically retrofit rectangular reinforced concrete columns.

Reinforced concrete beams with fibre reinforced plastic bars
Fibre reinforced polymer reinforcing bars can be used in reinforced concrete structures situated in corrosive environments as FRP is a durable and chemically resistant material. However FRP is also a brittle material because it has linear elastic characteristics prior to fracturing without a yield plateau. Hence reinforced concrete beams with tension FRP bars are brittle structures so that moment redistribution cannot occur. However research has shown that the ductility of these beams can be developed by placing FRP bars in the compression regions.

Composite profiled slabs and beams
Profiled sheets or steel decking can be used to manufacture both composite profiled beams and composite profiled slabs. Design procedures have been developed to determine both the shear and flexural strengths of these structures from composite partial interaction theory which can be used in design but which can also be used to reducing the amount of testing required in the development of new profiled sections.

Composite steel and concrete beams
The strength of shear connectors in composite steel and concrete beams depends on the proximity of the connectors to the sides of the slabs as well as to the vicinity of the ribs in composite slabs. Stud shear connectors can also fracture prematurely in composite beams due to excessive slip. Design and testing procedures have been developed for determining the strength and slip capacities of stud shear connectors in various configurations as well as in determining whether connectors will fracture prematurely in composite steel and concrete beams.

Fatigue assessment of composite bridge beams
Research has shown that shear connectors in composite steel and concrete beams deteriorate as soon as they are subjected to cyclic loads. Refined procedures have been developed for assessing the remaining strength and endurance of stud shear connectors in composite steel and concrete beams that allow not only for the deterioration in the shear connector but also in the beneficial reduction in the shear flow due to interface friction. These procedures can be used to design new structures for both fatigue strength and endurance, for assessing the remaining fatigue strength and remaining fatigue endurance of composite steel and concrete beams, and for assessing the effect of remedial action.

Ductility of reinforced concrete structures
A numerical model has been developed that can simulate all the rotational components of unplated and plated reinforced concrete beams and columns which includes the rotation limit due to softening of the concrete. The aim is to use this numerical model to develop ductility design rules for both plated and unplated reinforced concrete structures.

The plates were also bent over the edges and bolted for further anchorage. Prototype testing showed that both systems, that is adhesive bonding and bolting, could work independently but it was decided to adhesive bond and bolt so that the bolts could take over if chemical deterioration of the adhesive bond occurred.

Steel plated reinforced concrete beams

Reinforced concrete vehicular bridge beams were strengthened at Port Wakefield in South Australia by adhesive bonding and bolting steel plates. Design rules developed at Adelaide University showed that adhesively bonded tension face plates were unlikely to debond at working loads but that there was a possibility that they would debond before the ultimate load was achieved. Hence the plates were both adhesively bonded and bolted to provide a full interaction bond at working loads and to allow the bolts to take over in the unlikely event that the ultimate load is applied. U-sections were chosen so that the bolts could be placed clear of the tension reinforcing bars.

Trapezoidal profiled steel decking

Prototype testing of a new and efficient composite profiled slab with trapezoidal steel decking and its resistance to the concentrated loads imposed by stud shear connectors when the profiled decking is part of a composite steel and concrete beam. New procedures were developed: for measuring the bond strength between the profiled sheet and the concrete directly; for measuring the beneficial effect of friction on the bond strength; for determining the vertical shear capacity of the profiled sheets; and for enhancing the strength of the stud shear connection in composite L-beams.

Fibre reinforced polymer strengthening of bridge slabs

Strengthening of a reinforced concrete vehicular bridge over Carrickalinga creek in South Australia by adhesive bonding carbon FRP plates to their tension faces. Design rules developed at the University of Adelaide were used to ensure that premature debonding did not occur through the formation of critical diagonal cracks, through the formation of intermediate cracks, and did not emanate from the plate ends due to stress concentrations induced by the termination of the plate.
