Guidelines for Transition

Program Rules

A student will normally be assessed for graduation from their Academic Program on the basis of the program rules that applied in the year they commenced study in that program. The following caveats apply:

  1. The Student may choose to graduate under any set of rules for a year in which they have an enrolment. Note that a student cannot 'mix and match' rules from different years.
  2. Where availability of specific courses changes, the Faculty may approve variations to the program rule requirements as deemed appropriate to accommodate such changes.

Students required by their program to take a course that has changed or been deleted must take an equivalent course, approved by the Faculty.

Total Unit Values for Programs

Students are not required to take more units than specified in the program under which they first enrolled. Typically, this will be 24 units per year of full-time study, however, for some double and combined programs may be more, as overloads may have been required in the past.

For this reason, where a student has been required to take courses where unit values have changed, the Faculty may permit students to graduate with 1 or 2 units less than the originally required by their program.

Students with 3 or more units less than the total number required by their program will be required to complete appropriate courses to complete their program. In the case where a student would have more units than required, they will be excused from an elective course. If no suitable elective course exists the student may be excused from another course, as determined by the Faculty.

Course Substitutions

Students who are required by their Academic Program to take Level 1 courses of 2 units value should email the Faculty Office for advice on course substitution.

The following table is a guide for how replacement courses will be determined for each student.

4 or more x 2 unit Level 1
courses needed
The student should consult the Faculty for detailed course advice.
3 x 2 unit Level 1
courses needed
The student will take 2 x 3 unit courses as determined by the Faculty.
2 x 2 unit Level 1
courses needed
The student may be required to take 2 x 3 unit courses if both courses are required as later year pre-requisites.
Otherwise, student will take 1 x 3 unit course as determined by the Faculty.
1 x 2 unit Level 1
course needed
The student may be required to take 1 x 3 unit course if the course is required as a later year pre-requisite.
Otherwise, student will be excused from the course.

Workshop Practical

Students taking the 3 unit version of Mechatronics IM may be granted an exemption from the Workshop Practical component if they have taken the 4 unit Design Practice course, which formally contained the Workshop Practical.

Students who have completed the 2 unit Mechatronics IM (not including the Workshop Practical) and have not completed the 4 unit Design Practice, will be required to complete the Workshop Practical component of Mechatronics IM as part of the requirements for Design Practice. This is to ensure all students complete the Workshop Practical.
