J. Mazumdar Prize in Engineering and Mathematics
Whereas a committee of former students, colleagues and friends of Jagannath
Mazumdar, Adjunct Professor in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering
and of Applied Mathematics has raised the sum of $13,500 and given it to the University
for the purpose of establishing a prize, the following rules are hereby made:
- There shall be a prize to be known as the " J. Mazumdar Prize in Engineering
and Mathematics" which shall be available for award annually.
- (a) The value of the prize shall be $650 or such other amount as the Faculty
of Engineering, Computer & Mathematical Sciences may from time to time determine.
b) The prize shall be in the form of a certificate and a cash cheque of the said
amount.

- To be eligible for the prize, a student must have completed the requirements
of the Bachelor of Engineering degree in the School of Electrical and Electronic
Engineering and the Bachelor of Mathematical and Computer Sciences. The student
will be eligible to be considered for the prize only in the year in which the
second of these degrees is completed.
- (a)The Prize will be awarded, as specified in Rule 5, to a student who has
achieved distinction in the work and examinations of Electrical and Electronic
Engineering courses presented towards the Bachelor of Engineering degree, and
also in the work and examinations for the degree of Bachelor of Mathematical and
Computer Sciences, majoring in Applied Mathematics.
- (b)Where there is no candidate of sufficient merit majoring in Applied
Mathematics, the prize may be awarded to the best eligible candidate majoring
in either Pure Mathematics, or Statistics.
- The award will be given to the best student who will be judged by the Heads
of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Mathematical Sciences. Where two
or more candidates are of equal merit, the prize shall be shared equally.
- Nomination for the award of the prize shall be made at the end of each year
by the above two Heads. The Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical
Sciences shall award the prize upon receipt of the nomination.
- The award shall not be made if, in the opinion of the Heads of Mathematical
Sciences and Electrical and Electronic Engineering, there is no candidate of sufficient
merit.
- The award is not to be offered more than once to a successful candidate.
- These rules may be varied from time to time, but the title and purpose of
the prize shall not be changed.
