The Bill Henderson Prize

In recognition of the contribution to applied mathematics of Associate Professor Bill Henderson who served the University in the years 1968-2002, the sum of $17000 was given to the University in 2004 by former students, friends and colleagues to establish a prize for applied mathematics, and the following rules for this prize are hereby made:

  1. There shall be a prize known as the "Bill Henderson Prize".
  2. The value of the prize shall be $800 or such amount as shall from time to time be determined.
  3. The prize shall be awarded annually by the Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences on the recommendation of the Head of the School of Mathematical Sciences.
  4. To be eligible for the Bill Henderson Prize, a student must have completed MATHS 1012 Mathematics 1B or MATHS 2004 Mathematics IIM and remain enrolled in at least six units of Level II Applied Mathematics (defined as any course with APP MTH 2***), including at least one of APP MTH 2008 Operations Research II and APP MTH 2003 Modelling with Differential Equations II.
  5. The prize shall be awarded to the student, who, of those eligible, achieved the greatest distinction in the work and examinations of the required Mathematics courses taken (either MATHS 1011 Mathematics 1A and MATHS 1012 Mathematics 1B or MATHS 1014 Mathematics 1MB and MATHS 2004 Mathematics IIM). Exemptions may be given for part of these courses, but will not exclude a student from eligibility.
  6. The prize will be paid in two equal instalments, upon fulfilment of clauses (4) and (5) respectively.
  7. No award shall be made if there is no candidate of sufficient merit.
  8. If, in any year, two or more candidates are of equal merit, the prize shall be shared equally.
  9. The award is not to be offered more than once to a successful candidate.
  10. These rules may be varied from time to time but the title and general purpose of the prize shall not be changed.
