The Bill Henderson Prize
In recognition of the contribution to applied mathematics of Associate Professor
Bill Henderson who served the University in the years 1968-2002, the sum of $17000
was given to the University in 2004 by former students, friends and colleagues
to establish a prize for applied mathematics, and the following rules for this
prize are hereby made:
- There shall be a prize known as the "Bill Henderson Prize".
- The value of the prize shall be $800 or such amount as shall from time to
time be determined.
- The prize shall be awarded annually by the Faculty of Engineering, Computer
and Mathematical Sciences on the recommendation of the Head of the School of Mathematical
Sciences.
- To be eligible for the Bill Henderson Prize, a student must have completed
MATHS 1012 Mathematics 1B or MATHS 2004 Mathematics IIM and remain enrolled in
at least six units of Level II Applied Mathematics (defined as any course with
APP MTH 2***), including at least one of APP MTH 2008 Operations Research II and
APP MTH 2003 Modelling with Differential Equations II.
- The prize shall be awarded to the student, who, of those eligible, achieved
the greatest distinction in the work and examinations of the required Mathematics
courses taken (either MATHS 1011 Mathematics 1A and MATHS 1012 Mathematics 1B
or MATHS 1014 Mathematics 1MB and MATHS 2004 Mathematics IIM). Exemptions may
be given for part of these courses, but will not exclude a student from eligibility.
- The prize will be paid in two equal instalments, upon fulfilment of clauses
(4) and (5) respectively.
- No award shall be made if there is no candidate of sufficient merit.
- If, in any year, two or more candidates are of equal merit, the prize shall
be shared equally.
- The award is not to be offered more than once to a successful candidate.
- These rules may be varied from time to time but the title and general purpose
of the prize shall not be changed.
