Computer Systems Engineering

Computer Systems engineers design, create and integrate computer systems into larger systems, or manage this creation and integration. They might design circuits related to computer systems, write software, install and manage computer networks, plan projects or manage people engaged in the above activities. They need a detailed and thorough knowledge of the structure of computer systems and of digital circuit design methods. They will be competent programmers in one or more programming languages and will be practiced exponents of software engineering methods.

This degree develops these skills by providing a strong background in mathematics and physics as well as extensive practice in the creation and debugging of both hardware and software systems. It also develops written and oral communication skills, and familiarity with project management and quality control techniques. In their final year students can select elective courses from the areas of integrated circuit design, communications and signal processing, control systems, power engineering, electromagnetics, or economics.

Computer Systems engineers can gain employment with government departments and instrumentalities, manufacturers of computers or computer interfaces, large and small manufacturers of computer controlled equipment, software companies, consulting engineering companies, any large organisation with significant computing installations, or research organisations. Alternatively they may start their own companies.
