Bachelor of Mathematical and Computer Sciences

The Bachelor of Mathematical and Computer Sciences is a very flexible academic program for students who wish to study mathematics, statistics and/or computing. Those studies can be combined with courses from Commerce, Design Studies, Economics, Engineering, Finance, Humanities & Social Sciences or Science. Previous students have enrolled in courses as diverse as accounting, geology, anthropology, biotechnology, history, languages, music studies, philosophy, politics, pharmacology and psychology. Each student will have an individual program developed in consultation with a program advisor. Depending on the selection of courses, graduates may be able to become members the Australian Computer Society.

Opportunities for graduates occur over a wide range of occupations. Graduates are employed in business, industry, the government sector and in research organisations. Depending on the selection of courses, graduates may be employed as computer professionals, mathematicians, statisticians, actuaries or teachers (this requires additional professional teacher training).

The importance of the applications of the mathematical sciences in the physical and biological sciences is well established. Now the role of the mathematical scientist is also being recognised as increasingly valuable in the social sciences, finance, economics, linguistics, psychology and other humanities areas.

Students who do well in their courses may complete an additional year of study to obtain an honours degree which provides opportunity for research and enhanced employment prospects.
