Telecommunications EngineeringTelecommunications engineers design, construct, maintain and upgrade telecommunications and data networks responsible for transferring and managing information electronically. The work of these engineers underpins modern communications including the Internet, mobile telephones, telephony and broadband networks, and international communications by satellite and optical fibre. Our graduates receive an education based in part on radio and optical communications technologies, and multimedia. Employment opportunities are available in telecommunications, Internet and related areas such as broadcasting and remote sensing. Telecommunications engineers also have expertise in the areas of network planning, distributed systems and databases, resource management, modelling and simulation, electronic and computer systems. The Telecommunications Engineering academic program covers the structure of computer systems, telecommunication systems and networks, and software systems. This requires a strong background in mathematics as well as extensive practice in the design and operation of both hardware and software systems. The academic program also develops communication skills and familiarity with project management and quality control techniques. In their final year students undertake courses from the general areas of computer engineering, communications and electronics.
