Mathematical Geometry and its Applications

Professor Mathai Varghese, Director, Australian Professorial Fellow
Professor Michael Murray, Deputy Director

Geometry lies at the core of modern mathematics with deep and wide implications in all other mathematical disciplines. In the last decade there has been an extraordinary confluence of ideas in mathematics and theoretical physics brought about by pioneering discoveries in geometry and analysis. Geometry pervades modern technology (medical imaging and information security being two well known examples).

A University-Designated Research Centre, the Institute for Geometry and its Applications (IGA) organises symposia, workshops, instructional schools and regular seminars. The IGA also provides collaborative opportunities to promote research in geometry.

The IGA has particular expertise in mathematical physics, particularly string theory, geometric analysis, differential geometry, representation theory of Lie groups and finite geometry and its applications to information security.

Aims

  • Undertake world class research in geometry and its applications.
  • Provide postgraduate training in geometry and its applications.
  • Promote the development of national and international collaborative links.
  • To be ranked amongst the worlds top research groups in geometry.

2010: IGA special year in Geometry and its Applications

  • IGA Lecture Series (6 or more are planned)
  • IGA Workshops (2 or more are planned)
  • IGA Postdocs (2 positions advertised)
  • IGA mini winter school (planned in July)

For further details, visit the IGA website.
