Theoretical and Applied Mechanics

Group Leader: Associate Professor Jim Denier

Theoretical and Applied Mechanics is an internationally recognised discipline that draws together research in fluid and solid mechanics. Internationally its practitioners are drawn from Applied Mathematics and the various Engineering disciplines (Mechanical, Aeronautical, Aerospace, Civil etc).

Theoretical and Applied Mechanics research at the University of Adelaide can trace its roots back to the founding of the University. The Foundation Chair of Mathematics was Sir Horace Lamb, a leading figure in 19th century Fluid Mechanics. Since the late 1960’s Theoretical and Applied Mechanics focused around the work of the late Professor Ernie Tuck, in Applied Mathematics, and Sam Luxton (in Mechanical Engineering).

The scope of the group is to provide scale and focus for researchers at the University of Adelaide working in fluid and solid mechanics. As such it will provide a nurturing and intellectually rigorous environment for both postgraduate students and early career researchers.

The group's research will be communicated with the broad research community through publication in world leading archival journals, invitations and presentations at world leading conferences and invitations to serve on organising and scientific committees.
