DECS Western and Northern District Partnership
Introduction
The DECS Metro Western and Northern District Partnership with the University of Adelaide’s Faculty of Engneering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences (ECMS) has been formed with the goals of:
- engaging with secondary school teachers and students and promoting interest in mathematics, physics and chemistry
- developing collaboration between secondary teaching and academic teaching staff
In line with these goals, we have developed a range of initiatives for teachers and students that aim to:
- inspire students to pursue maths and science education pathways
- encourage students to consider a university education
- ensure that students have access to high quality education and every opportunity to reach their full potential
- broaden students’ options and opportunities to study within the tertiary education sector
- develop supportive networks between secondary and tertiary teaching staff
- support teachers with their professional development needs by offering inspirational ideas and tools to enrich the learning experience of their students

Events and Activities
- Group Visits to the University of Adelaide
Groups of up to 20 students with their teachers to experience life at University by touring and experiencing the teaching activities within Engineering, Computer Science and Mathematical Science. Tours last an average of two hours and experiences can be tailored to the interests and level of the group. Tours may include practical demonstrations and hands on activities. - Visits to Secondary Schools from the University of Adelaide
An opportunity to introduce larger groups of students to where University study can lead with a focus on disciplines of study offered by ECMS. World class academics who are at the forefront of their discipline engage students with informative presentations while ECMS staff provide practical tips on getting to University, covering areas such as prerequisite requirements and bonus points. - Teacher Placements
Suitable for senior maths and science teachers, teacher placements within ECMS can be negotiated on an individual basis. Professional Development Days for Secondary School Teachers
Senior maths and science teachers are invited to spend a day with high profile ECMS academics from a range of disciplines, learning about the latest developments in their fields and looking at ‘real world’ examples and applications of engineering, computer science and mathematics.
