Women in Technology: Are you up for the Challenge?
On a special day in July 2007, 120 female students from Years 10 to 12 descended on the University of Adelaide to enjoy a day of interactive and challenging activities led by inspiring female academics in the fields of engineering, computer and mathematical sciences.
In 2008, this one-day event dubbed the ‘Women in Technology Challenge’ will take place on Tuesday 15 July and then be repeated Wednesday 16 July in order to cater for 240 female students ranging from Years 9 to 12.
Students will be encouraged to develop their problem-solving, communication and teamwork skills to find creative solutions to stimulating problems. They will also benefit from a unique opportunity to engage with female student ambassadors, academics and like-minded peers.
Schools are invited to nominate students studying science, maths or physics, or with a strong interest in careers in engineering, maths or computer science. As activities differ from year to year, students who attended the event in 2007 are more than welcome.
A limited number of places are still available. Nominations including school, contact person, student names and year levels should be sent to Kirby Gagliardi, Events and Liaison Officer. Nominations will be accepted on a first-come first-served basis.
For further information regarding Challenge nominations and registrations, contact Kirby Gagliardi, Events and Liaison Officer, 8303 6476.
Feedback from 2007 Participants
In the second week of the holidays I visited the University of Adelaide for the Women in Technology Challenge. We learnt about the Engineering courses that are offered at Adelaide University. There were so many different types of Engineering and we experienced many activities and practicals in these courses. Everyone had a great day and we really enjoyed it. It was a great opportunity to give students ideas about what we want to study at University and explore all of the possibilities for our future. I really enjoyed this and I would like to go again if this experience was offered again. I hope that more students from OLSH might join in this challenge next time and have an opportunity to develop your skills in a new situation. -Nhi Vong
It was a great experience and it was so interesting to see what happens in different parts of the University. It was awesome being in a lab room with the walls, floor and roof where made of foam. In the room next door, the total opposite scenario was set up where a room was made completely of concrete and metal. We were well looked after with a delicious morning tea and lunch which was generously supplied by the University. Everybody was really friendly which made the day even more fantastic. We had a great experience where we learnt a lot about Maths and Science and it made us look forward to University experiences. -Emma Young
